[if This little demon has already probably saved me 3 speeding tickets. I feel absolutely no guilt using it because I've come to realize what a cash cow speeding tickets are for the local and state governments. Some people don't like radar detectors because they're 'always beeping', but I've found they're usually a dumbass who doesn't have the machine set correctly. It comes ready to detect 6 bands, but I've found in Central Florida that Ka and Laser are mainly what Police and Sheriff use. So if you stick with Highway Mode with only Ka and Laser active, you'll be pleasantly suprised.

Some Major Caveats:
1) I only go 10-20 (usually closer to 10) over at most. If you're going faster than that, you may still get a ticket because the Ka band travels much faster than the old X Band....it may however end up being a lesser fine because you'll be able to slow down a bit.

2) This works best when cops cheat and lock their doppler. It is illegal to do so (but since when have they cared), but in this case, it works in your favor. You can sniff it out quite far in advance.

3) The most dangerous areas when the cop uses the radar gun right as you drive by. When you're within 15 feet of a radar gun is the most difficult time to be able to do anything.

4) The power must be ON for the thing to work. I know that sounds silly, but if the power cord becomes loose (someone or something snags it) from the cigarette lighter for any reason, you're a sitting goose.

A friend of mine who is more of a lead foot than I uses a Valentine One. I'm not willing to put 0 into a radar detector (yet)....but for now, I like this one.

The really cool thing is that sometimes even though a patrol car is sitting by the side of the road, they're not running radar! There have been dozens of times when I'll realize I drove about 20 over past a patrol car, and the detector never went off.....and the cop never came after me! I like knowing when radar is present. When you get used to it, you'll feel quite vulnerable in your car without one.]

I got the radar for Christmas and took it for a trip out of town when the police were very heavy looking for speeders and it did not do well at all. I counted nearly 20 police cars on the trip and it went off only 3 times. Many were sitting on the side looking for speeders, and others it was obvious that a radar was sitting on their dash. So, was expecting that it should have gone off at least a number of times more. I returned it

Well, I bought this one since I give my wife the other one I had. The problem I have with this one is that the range is much less than the other one I had and the signal strenght bar never gets over 1 even if you are right next to the plice car.

Not a good one to have IMO. I think I’m going to return it and buy another brand.

Still going – Juan Lopez –
I have this Cobra for three years now. The speaker has just blown out from some reason besides volume maxed. For paying around 0, it has saved me from all types, to include laser. The emergency alert has only come on twice in the three years. I am not an excessive speeder, but love the warnings around curves and hills. If you are looking new, good system for ‘normal’ drivers. Due to the speaker, I would not buy used.

What do you expect? – –
This is the 3rd cobra I have bought. I owned the previous version of this model that I purchased for about 0.00 – 3 years ago. My previous one was stolen out of my vehicle. Everybody keeps complaning about the accuracy & distance. As for false alarms I haven’t gotten any. Obviously its is picking something up or it wouldn’t be going off! I simply set mine for the city mode & shut off the VG2 alert. Mine basicly goes off for the K alerts only. I have had mine for about 3 weeks now it working just as good as my previous one did. Yes the range is on the shorter side but if you can not afford the 0 for a Valintine this will work. I used the under 13 to avoid registering an account.

I couldn’t be happier with this detector. Easy to use, windshield mount is very solid, and it detects a wide array of signal types. From the speed traps it’s already helped me avoid I’d say it’s paid for itself several times over.

Got 3 tickets and each time the detector did not make a peep. But it goes off in every parking lot and many stop lights. Cobra support said the the first detector was defective and sent me a newer improved 9870 model and it does not work.

I got prompt shipment, however the product its self was not any good. I was told this was a brand new never out of the box radar detector, however I found out from Cobra that this product was defected. I don’t know if this product was defected from the factory or if this product was a refurbish, but Cobra has sent me a replacement for this unit.

So many false alerts you won’t know if any of them are real. That is if it detects the real ones. My town uses radar trailers that use the same Ka band as the cars but my 9870 would not detect it sometimes. Then for some reason it would just start going off when I was in the middle of no where. It would seem to cycle through everything “Ka…..K…..X….Train approaching”. For some reason there were a lot of trains crossing my paths in places like parking lots. Now I know that radar detectors have false alerts but this thing is horrible!!! Don’t waste your money! Invest in another company, Cobra makes horrible radar detectors, this is my second and last one. Don’t bother getting help with your detector from Cobra either they just don’t care. Check out the Escort Passport 8500 X50 instead.

High Dollar Junk – Steven B. – Norman, OK United States
Please do not be fooled by the high dollar look of this unit! All Cobra detectors are full of software glitches. I started with the older 9550 model and it had so many glitches in it that Cobra kindly upgraded me to the 9870. But guess what. This “new and improved” unit is based off of the same old junk. It uses much of the same software and has many of the same problems. Some problems include loss of “stay set memory”, changes in brightness level without command, inoperative “smart power”. As far as detection goes, this unit is very lacking. Many times I can see the cop, using constant radar, before this unit does. It constantly falses Ka and VG-2/Spectere/POP (if selected on). The only good thing about this unit is that it is plenty loud. If you dare purchase a cobra, I am sure you will be very dissastisfied and will want to return it. Cobra customer service will be glad to swap you out with a new one with the same poblems. Buyer beware!!

As the unit is very well thought out, user friendly & flat out cool.
I have been using this for about a month now, & the fact that i have not been ticketed IS a positive point in it's favor, as i recently tricked out my Jetta & now hardly a day goes by that i dont hit 100 + mph. So yeah it DOES WORK.
BUT
As you have no doubt heard it is prone to false signals
It WILL detect & sound off when in close proximity to another radar detector. Yes, you will have to deal with sorting out whats what when it sounds off, yet even though that is problematic.....it is not so much so to discount it's usefulness altogether.
A quick visual scan will access the probability factor of the signals veracity, caution is advised as a mistake could be very costly.
Detection range is sub par when compared to higher end units, yet it will alert within an acceptable radius giving you just enough reaction time. & truthfully....i do not want or need to be alerted to a radar gun going off 2 miles away.....that could be more confusing than close range false signals. So the detection range....although somewhat limited.....seems adequate.
I REALLY like how stealthy the unit is....no ugly coiled "telephone cords" to alert others to my detectors presence.
I REALLY like how i dont have to remember to turn the main unit on....it fires up when you start the car....with a voice informing you that the "system is ready" which reminds you to turn on the RDU [ remote display unit ] Yet even if you were to forget to turn the RDU on….you are still covered as the main unit will sound off anyways….you just wont enjoy the benefit of the signal ID feature.
I think this is Cobra’s best effort to date, it is very well thought out & executed & if it were not for the range & false signal issues would be a 5 star unit.I felt it just barely deserves the four star rating as i think the pros outweigh the cons.
So bottom line is….this is the best “economy” unit out there at this moment IMO & will serve you well as long as you drive smart.
Remember
A radar detectors effectiveness is enhanced or eliminated by operator intelligence.
They are not going to offer you a magic blanket of protection from the cops.
Once you “tune into” a detector & realize it capabilities & limitations you work within those parameters & maximize your driving potential.

So, even though this unit is not perfect.. .i can & do give it a good recommendation.

Cobra’s Best! – J. Nerney –
Having owned the XRS-R9G, I fell in love with the GPS feature. However, I wanted the R10G with the mini-USB GPS unit. I found there to be a significant difference in appearance and cleanliness of this product on my windshield.

As for actual use, this detector works on all bands, as specified. While driving on 422 in Philly area, it alerted me to all State troopers and various traffic signals. The Camera maps are accurate, as it has specified every intersection in my locale which utilizes a speed trap system.

This detector is the best I would recommend in cleanliness and ease of use. It has kept me and my Pontiac G8 GXP safe from tickets for quite some time.

Falses like no other! – Jared R. Mcquade –
This detector is fun with all it’s gadgets, but for it’s main job detecting radar it falses all the time. Even after I turn off instant on detection and and turn it to it’s lowest city mode it still will false like no tomorrow. This is typical of cobra radar detectors though. I strongly suggest you save up for a little more and get a good detector instead of falling into cobra’s trap of getting you interested with all the other things the detector does. I regret my purchase after researching online how all of cobra’s radar detectors are subpar on their main job. Until cobra steps up their game I suggest you stay away. It does typically give you enough detection range to make use of a real threat when it happens, but the detector falses so much it’s hard to tell a real from fake threat and you just start ignoring it after a while. If you like a neat remote control gadget that does lots of things buy this, but if you want a reliable radar detector that you can trust every time save a little more money and get a better one.

Can’t say anything about the range of detection except that I was able to slow down when needed and in time! Junk, save up and buy a real one – Gloria Delisio – Phoenix, AZ
First off, let me say that giving this radar detector one star is one star too much.

When I got this detector I thought it was the greatest thing ever (What a fool I was!). I used it on a 6 hour road trip to and from and it picked up EVERYTHING. Now, 4 months later, the thing doesn’t work. Now I know some cops don’t keep their radar on when they are driving… But EVERY cop and every police station I’ve passed in the last 4 months must be on a radar strike or this thing simply does not work (Oh, and I pass two police stations every day going to work also… so 4 times per day if you count the whole commute)… PLUS I got a photo radar ticket on the highway!!! The thing never went off!!! Need I say anything more?

But that’s not the only feature this wonderful device has! The compass is truly a remarkable thing. Using this detector, I have found out that I do not live South West from my place of work… I live NORTH from it… Oh, and when I drive back home it’s the weirdest thing… I should be going South, right? But no… I still go NORTH!!! In fact, everywhere I go I always seem to be driving NORTH in my car. It’s quite comical. I’ve felt like throwing the thing out of my window so many times that I had to just quit using it. Where I live, everything is NESW. I get a little irate at it when I’m heading South and the thing NEVER changes from North. I’ve reset the thing countless times, too. My iPHONE is a far better compass than this waste of material. Hmmm, maybe I can even download a radar app for my phone for free?

The point is this: I will never buy a Cobra again. Waste of plus 0 for my ticket. .99 too much if you ask me. I could have used that 0 towards a REAL radar detector.

Please learn from my mistake and buy a real detector.

I had it for couple years now, and just last month it picked up laser gun on a highway for the first time, it was kinda late response, I saw police couple seconds earlier anyway.
I see cops on highways with lasers I guess all the time, but no response from this radar.
May be they use some kinda knew ones.
K and Ka signals range also no good.

I received this as a gift. Well I have gotten two tickets with it since Ive owned it in a month. This thing makes noise like hell, but they are all false alarms. Both my tickets were on interstate and the thing didn’t make a peep! If your serious about owning a radar detector, don’t be cheap and pay for a good one that will actually work when needed.

The Cobra is not to fault for my tickets, its my lead foot! I will purchase a good detector because it would be nice to have warning so i can slow down and avoid getting a ticket. It will not be a Cobra!
